This is our weekly round-up which will look at what happened in Lobo Sports in the last week and look ahead to the games and events that the week ahead will have for Lobo Sports.
Women’s Soccer (2-3-0): The Lobos won the only game they played this past week, beating Idaho State 4-1 behind goals from Maddie Irwin, Quincy Slora, Claire Lynch, and Lindsey Guice. This was the result the Lobos should have gotten, so I don’t think you can take too much stock in this game. The Lobos have won the games they should have so far, but haven’t managed to get a result against the stiffer competition. It will be interesting to see if they can build off of this result, especially given that things will get tougher this week as they hit the road to take on Minnesota on Friday at 6pm, and then head to East Lansing, Michigan to take on Michigan State this Sunday at 9:30am.
Volleyball (4-2): For the second straight weekend, the Lobos won the first two matches and then lost the third match in the 5th set. Over the weekend, Coach Nelson picked up his 400 and 401st career wins, which is certainly quite the achievement. This week, the Lobos head west to Los Angeles for the USC Classic, where they will take on Pepperdine Thursday at 1:30, USC Saturday at 9pm (on the Pac12 Network), and Idaho State Saturday at 12pm. This should be a great test for the Lobos and should help come conference time.
Men’s Soccer (1-1-1): The Lobos had a successful weekend at the Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament with a 2-2 draw against University of San Diego, and a 2-1 win against UC Santa Barbara. It was a great week for Chris Wehan, who scored all four goals for the Lobos and was named National Player of the Week by three publications, MVP of the Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament, and Conference USA Player of the Week. This weekend, the Lobos head west to California to face CS Northridge on Friday at 7pm followed by nationally-ranked Loyola Marymount University on Sunday at 4pm.
Cross Country: The Lobos participated in the Texas Tech Invitational in Ruidoso, but neither the men’s or women’s team ran any of their top runners. The cross country teams don’t have another event until the first weekend of October, when they head to Norte Dame for a big meet.
Football (1-0): The Lobo football did what they were supposed to do by dominating Mississippi Valley State 66-0. We can’t take too much out of this game, simply because of the difference in talent, so this week’s home game on Saturday at 6pm against Tulsa should be an interesting test for the Lobos. If they are able to win this weekend, they will have the foundation set for a bowl season.
