Weekly Roundup (9/18/15)

This is our weekly round up which will look at what happened in Lobo Sports in the last week and look ahead to the games and events that the week ahead will have for Lobo Sports. This will not be game previews or game recaps instead it will look at awards awarded to Lobo players, the outcome of games, as well as giving you a one post location for the week ahead.

Women’s Soccer (2-5-0): The Lobos are coming of a week where they played well against two Big Ten teams in Minnesota and Michigan State. Unfortunately, despite the good play, they didn’t get the results that they wanted, losing 1-0 against Minnesota and 1-0 in OT against Michigan State. The Lobos have a Cherry-Silver Exhibition this Saturday at 7pm and start MW play next weekend. Hopefully this will allow the Lobos to regroup and put together a solid conference season.

Volleyball (5-4): The Lobos went to the USC Classic and played well against two very strong teams in Pepperdine and USC, losing to Pepperdine in four sets and having two close sets against USC in a 3-0 loss. It wasn’t a complete loss of a weekend, as they were able to come back and beat Idaho State in five sets. The Lobos come back to Albuquerque for the Days Inn and Suites Lobo Invitational to face CS Northridge Friday at 7:30pm, LIU Brooklyn Saturday at 1pm, and LSU at 7:30 pm. All the matches are at WisePies Arena AKA The Pit, and this is the last tune-up before MW play starts this next week.

Men’s Soccer (3-1-1): The Lobos return home after a great weekend in California, where they went 2-0-0 against with a 1-0 OT win against CS Northridge and a 2-1 win against nationally-ranked LMU side. The Lobos will host the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitation, where they play host to Missouri State Friday night at 7pm, and American Sunday at 6pm. LMU will be the forth team at the invite and they will play American on Friday and Missouri State on Sunday. This is the last weekend slate the Lobos will play before Conference USA play start next weekend for the Lobos.

Men’s Golf: Kicked off their season in Minnesota for the Gopher Invitational and finished the weekend tied for 11th place, posting the 2nd best 3rd round at the tournament. Senior Joseph Abella rebounded from an 81 first round with back-to-back 1 under 70s to finish tied for 17th. Freshman Samuel Kim finished at 10 over par for the weekend, which put him tied for 29th place. The Lobos will have a week off and will have a home tournament next weekend.

Women’s Golf: The Lobos hosted the Branch Law Firm/ Dick McGuire Invitational finishing 7th place out of the 18 teams. The Lobos finished the first round in 2nd place with a team score of 288, but struggled a little in the 2nd round, posting a team score of 300. The Lobos had two golfers shoot under par in Manon Molle and Sol Lee, which tied them for 14th in the tournament. The Lobos head to Furman in Greenville, South Carolina for a tournament on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Men’s Tennis: Will be kicking of their season at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas. The invitational will go Friday-Sunday. The best way to get updates is probably through their twitter feed, @UNMMenTennis.

Cross Country: Although they don’t have their first real meet until October, both the women’s and men’s teams moved up in the national rankings, with the women going from 2nd to 1st and the men going from 21st to 20th. This marks not only the first time that the women have been the top ranked cross country team, it is only the second time that any Lobo team has been ranked first nationally (with the men’s soccer team being the only other team to achieve that ranking). If the expectations for the cross country teams weren’t high before, they’re through the roof now.

Football (1-1): The Lobos are coming of a disappointing week where they were beat by Tulsa at home 40-21. The Lobos have a tough task today, as they go on the road for the first time of the season and play a strong opponent in Arizona State. If the Lobos are able to pull of the upset, it will help Lobo fans to forget about last week’s game. It will be a tough game for the Lobos and hopefully they will be able to play better than last week. The game is Friday night at 8pm MT and will be on TV on the Pac12 Network and radio on 770 KOB.
