Weekly Roundup (9/23/15)

This is our weekly round up which will look at what happened in Lobo Sports in the last week and look ahead to the games and events that the week ahead will have for Lobo Sports. This will not be game previews or game recaps instead it will look at awards awarded to Lobo players, the outcome of games, as well as giving you a one-post location for the week ahead.

Women’s Soccer (2-5-0): The Lobos had a schedule break before the beginning of Mountain West Conference play. Because of this, they didn’t play a match this week and will go almost two weeks between games. This weekend, the Lobos will look to start off conference play with a couple of results as they go on a road trip to face Utah State (5-3-1) Friday at 4pm and Boise State (2-4-3) Sunday at 1pm. It is important for the Lobos to play well, which would get their confidence going to have a great conference season.

Volleyball (7-5): The Lobos hosted the Days Inn and Suites Invitational, going 2-1 on the weekend with wins against Cal State Northridge and LIU Brooklyn. The Lobos looked to finish off the weekend with a 3-0 record, but fell to a tough LSU squad in five sets. The Lobos will start off Mountain West play this weekend, when they host SDSU (3-9) Thursday at 7pm and Nevada (5-7) on Saturday at 1pm.

Men’s Soccer (5-1-1): The Lobos had another great weekend at home for the TLC Pluming & Utility Invitational. With the two wins this weekend, the Lobos are on a five match-winning streak as they enter Conference USA play this weekend. In the Invitational, the Lobos collected wins over Missouri State (1-0) and American University (2-1 in OT). The Lobos will now hit the road for their CUSA opener, where they will head east to take on South Carolina (4-2-1 overall, 1-0-0 conference). This is an important game for the Lobos, as they look to rebound from last year’s disappointing conference season. This could end up being a swing game in the conference because South Carolina is likely going to win most of their home matches.

Men’s Golf: The Lobos had a week off of play and will return to action here in Albuquerque for the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Friday and Saturday at UNM Championship Golf Course. Look for the Lobos to build off of their results in Minnesota.

Women’s Golf: The Lobos had a very successful week at the Lady Paladin Invitational in South Carolina, as they finished the invitational in 3rd place out of 17 schools. All five of the Golfers for the Lobos finished at least tied for 25th place and had very balanced individual scores, with all five golfers finishing within 2 strokes of each other. The Lobos now have plenty of time to work on anything they feel needs improvement, as they have a month until their next event.

Men’s Tennis: The Lobos started off their fall season in a great way by winning the Midland Invitational this weekend. The Lobo tennis player who had the best weekend was sophomore Bart Van Leijsen, who won the consolation final and made it to the finals of the doubles tournament with junior Hayden Sabatka. The Lobos head to Tucson this weekend to take part in the Arizona Invitational.

Women’s Tennis: The Lobos head to Boulder for their second invitational of the season where they will compete in the Colorado Invitational. The event will start on Thursday and go through Sunday.

Football (1-2): The Lobos rebounded well after the Tulsa game, where they looked lost, by showing fight and discipline against ASU. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough, as ASU was able to beat the Lobos 34-10. The Lobos hit the road again this weekend, as they head to Wyoming (0-3) on Saturday at 1pm to face a struggling team with a second-year head coach. If the Lobos want to go bowling this season, they need to win this game. If you can’t make it up to Laramie, the game will be televised on Root Sports.

It should be a great week of Lobo Sports, so show your support and go cheer on your Lobos!
