This is our weekly round up which will look at what happened in Lobo Sports in the last week and look ahead to the games and events that the week ahead will have for Lobo Sports. This will not be game previews or game recaps instead it will look at awards awarded to Lobo players, the outcome of games, as well as giving you a one post location for the week ahead.
Women’s Soccer (7-7-1; 5-2-1): The Lobos went 1-1-0 this past weekend at home, with an overtime loss against San Jose State and a 5-1 blowout victory against Fresno State. All six of the Lobo goals were scored by different players, which shows the balance of this team. The Lobos have had a good start to the conference season and are in 3rd place right now in the MW with three matches to go. This week, they will face Colorado College, who is in 4th place, on Friday in Colorado Springs followed by a trip to Colorado Springs to face Air Force on Sunday at noon. At this point, the Lobos still have a chance to share the conference regular season championship, but will likely need to go 3-0-0 for that to happen. They way they’ve been playing, they certainly have a shot of doing just that.
Men’s Soccer (7-4-2; 1-3-0): The Lobos went 1-0-1 this past week, with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Valparaiso, where they scored in the first minute but allowed the equalizer at the very end of the game, and a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win against UAB on Sunday. It was an important week for the Lobos to pick up results after struggling to start of Conference USA play, so hopefully this will give them some momentum heading into the end of the regular season. The Lobos head to Huntington, West Virginia this Friday to take on Marshall. The Lobos will need to win this match to have a chance to get to a .500% record in conference going into the last two weeks of matches and to improve their chances of making the NCAA tournament. The Lobos will return home for a Tuesday night match against Charlotte, who is 3-0-1 in Conference USA play.
Volleyball (11-9; 4-3): The Lobos had a dominating week of conference matches, dropping only one set combined in their matches at home against Fresno State and UNLV. It was good to see the Lobos have such a great showing after losing all six sets the prior weekend. This weekend is a very important road trip for the Lobos as they head to Reno, Nevada to take on University of Nevada, and San Diego for a match against SDSU. If the Lobos are able to win both matches, they will be positioned well in the conference as they play the last half of conference matches.
Men’s Golf: The Lobos finished 11th out of 15 teams this week in a loaded field at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Florida. Joseph Abella was the low score for the Lobos, posting a +5 which put him at tied for 20th place. Three other Lobos all tied for 53rd place with final scores of +13. The Lobos will head to Dallas next week for the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Women’s Golf: The Lobos finished 5th of 14 teams at this week’s Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite in Austin, Texas. Manon Molle and Ingrid Gutierrez, who both placed tied for 6th at even par, led the Lobos. The Lobos head to Las Vegas next week for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
Men’s Tennis: The Lobos are hosting the USTA/ITA regionals this week at the UNM Tennis Complex. The event starts today and runs through Friday. Look for the Lobos to build off of early success this fall season.
Women’s Tennis: The Lobos had a very successful week at the ITA tournament in Las Vegas, where Adrea LeBlanc made it to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament. The Lobos will have the week off of matches, and will return to action for the Lobo Invite on October 30th.
Football (4-3, 2-1): The Lobos won a thrilling, last-minute comeback win against Hawaii, keeping their bowl game chances alive, as they only need to win two of their remaining five games to become bowl eligible. The Lobos head to San Jose, California to take on San Jose State in a key game for both teams on Saturday.
Men’s Cross Country: The Lobos had a good showing at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, finishing 23rd in a field loaded with great teams. Senior Dan Milechman was the fastest Lobo at the Invite, posting a time of 24:14:8 and placing 59th overall. The Lobos will rest up and prepare for the MW Championship in Reno on October 30th. Look for the Lobos to be in the hunt for another conference title.
Women’s Cross Country: It was another big meet for the Lobos and another blow out win. The top-ranked Lobos destroyed the field and the old event record for team score at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, posting a team score of 32. All five Lobos that scored for the team finished in the top 10, which is made even more impressive by the quality of the overall field. The Lobos are the favorite to win the national title and could win UNM its first women’s team national title and the second team national title in all sports. This week, the Women will rest up for the MW Championship in Reno on October 30th.
It should be a great week of Lobo Sports so show your support and go cheer on your Lobo Teams!
