Men’s Soccer vs. Old Dominion Match Preview

Tonight is Senior Night for the Lobos (9-6-1, 3-3-1), as well as the regular season finale. The Lobos were able to clinch a spot in the conference tournament with their win on Sunday against South Carolina, with goals by seniors Chris Wehan and Niko Hansen. While the field is set, there is plenty for the Lobos to play for on Friday. First, the Lobos could possibly move up to the #3 seed in the tournament with a win and some help. Second, the Lobos look to go undefeated at home this season, which would be a huge accomplishment. Finally, they could end this senior class’ home careers with a huge win against the ODU Monarchs (5-7-2, 2-4-1). This will be a night of celebrating the five seniors that have done so much for this program and I hope that a great Lobo crowd shows up for this match.

  • ODU is 1-3-1 on the road this season, and 1-1-1 in conference road matches this season.
  • Their attack is led by Sebastian Hauret, who has scored 2 goals and has assisted on 6 goals. Other attacking players to watch are Nik Klosterhalfen (3 goals, 1 assist) and Jesse Miralrio (3 goals).
  • Alex Tiesenhausen has started every match in goal for the Monarchs with uneven results. He has a 1.70 Goals Against Average but does have 3 shutouts on the season.

UNM Lobos:

  Lobos Opponents
Goals 24 (6 1st Half, 18 2nd Half) 14 (4 1st Half, 10 2nd Half)
Goals Per Game 1.5 .88
Shots On Goal 110-238 (.462) 65-148 (.439)
Shots Per Game 14.9 9.2
Assists 17 8
Corner Kicks 107 68
  • The Lobos are 7-0-1 at home this season and, with a result, would be undefeated for the first time since 2012.
  • Niko Hansen scored his 10th goal of the season on Sunday, which doubled as his fifth game-winner of the season.
  • The Lobo backline appears to be on the same page again after some breakdowns a few weeks ago. The Lobo backline has a chance to go on a streak of shutouts as we go into tournament play.
  • This will be the last home regular season match of the season, and possible last home match of the careers of Nick Rochowski, Chris Gurule, Josh Goss, Niko Hansen and Chris Wehan. It would be incredible to see each senior do something great during this match to cap off their careers.

Things We Know Going into Friday:

There are a few things that we know before the matches on Friday.

  • The field is set for the conference tournament and the seven teams with bids are Charlotte, Kentucky, South Carolina, FIU, UNM, UAB, and ODU.
  • If Charlotte gets a result against Marshall, they will be the regular season champion and will have the #1 Seed and first round bye. Charlotte can’t be any worse than the #2 Seed.
  • Kentucky at South Carolina will in all likelihood be for the #2 Seed. Kentucky can get the #1 Seed with a win and a Charlotte loss. South Carolina can end up anywhere between the #2 Seed and the #5 Seed, depending on the outcomes of the various matches this weekend.
  • The Lobos can’t be any higher than the #3 Seed, but they do have the tie breakers over South Carolina and FIU if they all end up with 13 points. The lowest seed the Lobos can have is #6.

Thank You Seniors:

Here at Lobo Lane we would like to personally thank Nick Rochowski, Chris Gurule, Josh Goss, Niko Hansen and Chris Wehan for everything they have done for the program during the last 4 or 5 years. Your impact has been great and your legacy will live on in the Lobo Soccer Program. Your class has seen many ups and downs over the course of your time here, but each one of you played a part on a team that made the College Cup and will pass on a great tradition and culture to the next generation of Lobo Soccer Players. We’ll enjoy the rest of ride this season and we hope that you can make it two College Cup appearances in your time here!

Match Prediction:

This will be a great match for the Lobos to end their home schedule on. Expect each Lobo senior to try to make an impact on the match, and the other Lobos wanting to make sure that the five seniors go out with a win. I really like the Lobos’ chances in this match and put the odds of the Lobos winning the match at 48% and 77% chance of getting a result. I predict at 3-0 win with goals from Chris Wehan, Niko Hansen and Josh Goss.
