Weekly Roundup (1/16/2017)

After a lengthy break, we’re bringing back the Weekly Round-up to stay up to date with all Lobo sports! In the weekly round-ups we will have a recap of the results, key performances, and awards for the various sports, while also taking a look at what is coming up in the next week.

Men’s Basketball: (10-8, 3-3) (Last Week: 1-1) It was a week of the good (CSU win), the bad (UNLV loss), and the ugly (CSU incident) for the Lobos this weekend. This week also saw the breakout of sophomore wing Dane Kuiper, who scored 27 points in the week’s two games on 10-14 shooting. The Lobos head to Boise Idaho, to take on BSU on Tuesday night and will return home to take on Wyoming on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball: (8-8, 4-2) (Last Week: 0-2) After starting conference play 4-0, the Lobos went 0-2 this past week. That might seem like a terrible week, but it was an expected result. Losing at UNLV and at home against CSU doesn’t change the expected finished for the Lobos this year. Sophomore post Jaisa Nunn was great for the Lobos this week, averaging 15 points (11-21 shooting) and 8 rebounds. The Lobos have a huge week coming up, as they host a talented BSU team on Wednesday and then head to Wyoming to take on the first-place Cowgirls.

Indoor Track and Field: The indoor season starts for the Lobo track and field team as they host the Cherry and Silver Invitational at the convention center on Friday and Saturday.

Men’s Tennis: (0-3) (Last Week: 0-3) The Lobos started their season in Florida against 3 very good teams in Texas Tech, Arizona and UCF. They were swept by Texas Tech, and lost 1-4 to both Arizona and UCF. In doubles play, Ricky Hernandez-Tong/Rodolfo Jauregui won their match against Arizona, and Dominic West/Bart Van Leijsen won their match against UCF. Hernandez-Tong won two singles matches on the weekend for the Lobos, winning a match against both Arizona and UCF. The Lobos have this week off before heading to California.

Swimming and Diving: In a double dual against host San Diego State and Fresno State, the Lobos had some great performances during the meet, but there was no team results due to a scoreboard malfunction during three races. Sophomore Adriana Palomino had a great meet, winning both the individual 500 and 1,000 freestyle and as the anchor of the 400 Freestyle Relay. She also finished second in the 100 freestyle. Other members on the winning 400 Freestyle Relay team were Konoha Shinada, Talia Passarelli, and Madison Burns. Also of note was Emily McGill, who won the 400 IM and finished second in the 200 Breaststroke. Swimming and diving will have the week off before heading to Air Force the following weekend.

Skiing: The Lobo Ski team had great results the last couple of weekends in Utah and Montana. In both events, the Lobos finished 4th as a team (440 points in Montana, 489 points in Utah). In Montana, Krista Niiranen finished 2nd in the Women’s 15k Classic and 3rd in the 5k Freestyle. Patteri Vaherkoski finished 8th in the Men’s 20k Classic and 9th in the 10k Freestyle. In Utah, Niranen finished 2nd in the 10k Freestyle and won the classic sprint to account for 77 points on her own. Guyon finished 3rd in the 15k Freestyle, Vaherkoski finished 6th in the Classic Sprint, Katie Irwin finished 8th in the Giant Slalom, and Busengdal finished 6th in the Giant Slalom and 2nd in the Slalom.
