Women’s Basketball at Wyoming Game Preview

The Lobos (9-8, 5-2) return to Mountain West road play today, as they head to Laramie to take on the first-place Wyoming Cowgirls (14-3, 6-0). This will be one of the toughest games the Lobos will have this year, playing on the road against a very good Cowgirls team that plays great defense and has the best offense in the conference. The Lobos need to bring their A+ game to have a decent shot to win the game. The Lobos must shoot the ball well and limit their mistakes on both offense and defense to come away with the huge road win.

Wyoming Team Stats:

The Cowgirls, much like CSU, are built around their star player Liv Roberts, who is also a favorite to win the MW Player of the Year. The team that is built around her is all about balance and efficiency.

  • Liv Roberts leads the Cowgirls with her very efficient offense, averaging 16 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.24 assists.
  • The Cowgirls have five players shooting over 36%: Roberts (42.5%), Marta Gomez (43.6%), Natalie Baker (36.4%), Clara Tapia (42.9%) and Taylor Rusk (48.8%). The Lobos must limit the good looks from distance or we could be looking at a replay of the CSU game second half.

 News and Notes:

  • Cherise Beynon just missed the first Lobo Women’s first triple-double since 1978 by one assist against BSU. I’m starting to think it is likely that Beynon will finish with at least one triple-double this season. Beynon is averaging 15.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.06 assists.
  • Coach Bradbury brought a new starting lineup against BSU and he was rewarded with all five starters scoring in double figures. With the lineup change, the Lobos have five offensive threats for the beginning of the game. Also with the lineup change, it will be more likely to see a 7 player rotation as the norm.

  • SJSU 3-3

Game Prediction:

This is the first game of the season where the Lobos are sizable underdogs, facing one of the two best teams they will play this year and this time on the road. I have the Lobos with a 31% chance of winning this game, with a final score prediction of a 75-67 Wyoming win. I hope the Lobos can prove me wrong and come home with the huge road win.
