Zach’s Running Blog: Lobos vs. Fresno State 9/21/24

Sorry for the delay, I have been dealing with an issue on the site.

The Lobos (0-3) welcome Fresno State (2-1) for their opening Mountain West game of the season.

  • The Lobos won the toss and deferred to the second half.
  • Lobos defense forces a 3 and out for Fresno State, with the help of a couple of drops.
  • Lobos picked up the yardage for the first down but fumbled.
  • Fresno State took advantage of the turnover, scoring a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 8:37 on the clock.
  • Big pass play from Dampier to Wysong has the Lobos on the move. Lobos have a big 3rd and 3 coming up from the 31. Lobos can pick up 11 yards and the first down on a quick option play. Fresno State calls their first TO of the half, with a 3rd and 1 coming up for the Lobos at the 11-yard line. Lobos pick up the first down, but Fresno State is able to hold on the 3 plays inside the 10. Lobos will attempt the field goal. Luke Drzewiecki hits the 20-yard Field Goal. 2:20 1Q: Fresno State 8 Lobos 3.
  • Fresno State will start their next drive at the 25. Not sure what they were looking at, because that was an incomplete pass, the call stands to give Fresno State a first down. End of 1Q: Fresno State 8 Lobos 3. Fresno State will have a 3rd and 18 from the +43. That was a bad offsides on the Lobos. Fresno State picks up the 3rd and 13 play.  Another bad offsides play for the Lobos, gives Fresno State a first down, and they take advantage. 11:11 2Q: Fresno State 15 Lobos 3.
  • The Lobos drive will start from the 25. Dampier to Wysong for 14-yards to start the drive. Lobos will have a 3rd and 8 after a couple of runs didn’t do much. Fresno State gets the stop, forcing the Lobos to punt.
  • Fresno State will start their next drive at the 24. Have to figure out these dumb penalties. This is the second time that Jayden Wilson has been ejected for targeting, there was no reason to put yourself in that situation. Someone of defense has to make a big play. Can’t allow another TD on this drive. Huge drop by Fresno State, makes them settle for a FG. 5:03 2H: Fresno State 18 Lobos 3.
  • Lobos will start the drive at the 25. Huge 3rd down catch by Davis. Massive pass to Wysong for a huge gain, Wysong almost kept his feet to take it to the house. A couple of penalties have the Lobos with a 1st and 20. Dampier with a terrible pass for an interception.
  • Fresno State will look to dry out this clock. Lobos need to find a way to get off the field with no farther damage, or this game could be over. Fresno State with the double pass play for the Touchdown. 1:24 2Q: Fresno State 25 Lobos 3.
  • What a drive by Dampier and Co., I loved the designed runs on the drive. Big catches by Davis, Trujillo, Wysong, and Bruckler. :06 2Q: Fresno State 25 Lobos 10.
  • Halftime: Fresno State 25 Lobos 10. The Lobos will get the 2nd half kickoff.
  • The Lobos need to clear up somethings in the second half on defense, and some penalty problems on both sides. If they can keep the offense rolling to start the 2nd half they have a chance to make this into a game.
  • Lobos will start their drive at the 25. Dampier with a strike to Medford for 18 yards and picks up a massive 1st down. Lobos aren’t able to do anything else on the drive and have to punt.
  • Fresno State will start their drive at the 20 after the punt. Lobos aren’t able to get off the field with a 4th and 4 for Fresno State. Fresno State with a bad snap but they are able to jump on the ball. Lobos are able to force Fresno State to a FG. 4:51 3Q: Fresno State 28 Lobos 10.
  • Lobos drive will start at the 25. Another bad pass by Dampier, leading to another Fresno State pick.
  • The Lobos defense is able to get the stop, forcing a Fresno State punt. It goes into the end zone.
  • Lobos will have their drive start at the 20. The ref had a hot mic during that TO, and I can’t repeat what was said. Lobos have a TD called back due to a holding penalty. Trujillo with a 36-yard catch and run, Wyson with a big catch to end the 3Q. Fresno State 28 Lobos 10. Lobos will have a 1st and 10 from the 22 to start the 4Q. Davis with the first down catch to set the Lobos up inside the 10. Another bad penalty for the Lobos. Lobos with a FG. 12:12 4Q: Fresno State 28 Lobos 13.
  • Fresno State will start their drive at the 25. Lobos need a quick possession for any chance in this game. Big pass play to start the drive for Fresno State. Lobos with the stop on 3rd down, forcing a punt by Fresno State.
  • Fair catch at the 3 is not a smart play. I agree with going for it there, not sure about that play call. Fresno State gets the stop, and that will likely do it.
  • The Lobos have to clean things up this next week.
