Beating the Aggies is always sweet but this one might actually be a little bit sweeter. Not only did they mount a great comeback through an effective offense and a stifling defense in the second half, they picked up their third win, leaving them to only need to find three wins in their remaining seven games.

The Lobos were given a scare yesterday against New Mexico State, finding themselves down 15 early in the second half before a furious comeback allowed them to walk away with a 38-29 victory. The Lobos have now won four straight match-ups against the Aggies in the Rio Grande Rivalry, which also means that Coach Davie has never lost a game to the team down south. The win also improves the Lobos to 3-2 on the season, putting them halfway towards bowl eligibility.

After an encouraging weekend up in Wyoming, the Lobos (2-2) head home to face their in-state rivals, New Mexico State University (0-3). Aside from the three year stretch 2009-2011 (hmm… I wonder what was going on with the team then?), the Lobos have been dominating the Rio Grande Rivalry in recent years and look to continue that dominance on Saturday.

The win on Saturday against Wyoming was not only a good start to the conference season, it kept UNM’s bowl aspirations alive. With a loss, the Lobos would have needed an upset or two to get back to where that goal was within reach and it would have been hard to muster the confidence that such an upset was possible. Luckily, the Lobos played well and came away with the victory, allowing us to keep an eye on their bowl eligibility. With two wins down, they’re a third of the way there, needing to go at least 4-4 over the rest of the season.

The Lobos went back to basics today in Laramie, resulting in a 38-28 victory against Wyoming that was probably their most complete game of the season. This win was big for the Lobos, as not only did it keep their bowl chances alive, it started them out 1-0 in conference play and gave them some momentum going into the game next week against NMSU.

After a tough loss to a good Arizona State team, the Lobos head up to Laramie, WY to take on the Wyoming Cowboys in a must-win game. This is the part of the schedule that could either get UNM back on track in their quest for a bowl game, or dash those hopes completely.

It seems fair to say that Lobo football fans aren’t thrilled about the team’s 1-2 start. After a considerable buildup in hype in the preseason that this could be the year UNM returns to a bowl game, the losses to ASU and, mostly, Tulsa have deflated expectations and are causing some to already begin looking towards next year. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that we are now only a quarter of the way through the season and that the Lobos still have nine chances to win five more games. If they were playing in the SEC, it would be difficult to even feign optimism. Luckily, the Lobos are in the Mountain West.

UNM came into Tempe last night to face ASU as longshots to win, but also with the knowledge that ASU was not unbeatable and that a win would bring an excitement about the program that hasn’t been seen for the better part of a decade. They came out hard, showing the ability to move the ball and the ability to stop the Sun Devils. Unfortunately, the talent difference ended up being just too much for the Lobos to make up, as they lost 34-10 to drop to 1-2 on the season. However, their effort left me feeling a lot more confident about the season than I was before last night.

After a disappointing loss to Tulsa last week, the Lobos look to bounce back on the road against ASU on Friday night. This is one of the two toughest games the Lobos will play this season, and an upset victory would make everyone forget about last weekend.
