Tulsa, UNM Gang Up to Beat the Lobos

UNM faced its first real test of the season, matching up against the visiting University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane, and it… well, things could have gone better. In a game that was expected to be defined by a lot of scoring and offense, only Tulsa really lived up to that expectation. Tulsa put up 40 points on 600 yards of offense, coming pretty evenly on the ground and through the air. The Lobos, on the other hand, only managed 21 points from their 390 yards. With the game not being a shootout, it was instead defined by something else.

Football Game 1 Recap: Lobos beat the Delta Devils 66-0

The Lobos opened their 2015 season with a dominating performance against Mississippi Valley State University, completely overpowering the Delta Devils in their 66-0 victory, making my 63-14 prediction seem downright pessimistic. While the outcome was expected, it was still encouraging to see how well both the offense and defense played. The offense scored eight touchdowns (all on the ground), racked up over 500 yards, and didn’t have a single turnover. The defense not only pitched a shutout, they held MVSU to 74 yards of offense, forced three turnovers, and only gave up one play for more than 15 yards. They even returned an interception for a touchdown, for good measure. All in all, it was a very satisfying win that will give the team confidence as they begin to start playing FBS teams next week.

Cross Country Runs in Ruidoso

Yesterday, the Lobo cross country teams went down to Ruidoso to participate in the Texas Tech Double Duals, and participate they did. If we simply look at the results, they would be less than encouraging. The men’s and women’s teams had identical results, finishing below Texas Tech, NMSU, and UTEP, while only doing better than Wayland Baptist (the men’s results can be found here and the women’s results can be found here). This would be a really disappointing result for the 21st ranked nationally men’s team and the 2nd ranked nationally women’s team, if the goal had been anything but simply to participate.

Cross Country’s High Expectations

2007 was a different time. The Dow Jones began to decline, a terrible Fantastic Four movie was released, and Hillary Clinton was running for president. It also happened to be the last time that the UNM Women’s Cross Country team didn’t win the Mountain West Championship. For seven straight years, the women’s team has taken home the trophy, with the men joining them for the past six years. We’ve been spoiled, to say the least.

Hello

Welcome to Lobo Lane. This site is designed to be full of news, analysis, and commentary relating to UNM athletics. This, of course, will cover the basketball and football teams, but we also have a strong interest in the sports that don’t get as much time in the spotlight as they deserve.

This site is written by fans of the University of New Mexico Lobos to provide what we hope is thoughtful commentary and analysis of the various Lobo teams. We are not affiliated with UNM, so all opinions, right or wrong as they may be, are ours and ours alone.

We are heavily influenced by sabermetrics, so be forewarned, there may be numbers.

This is an experiment of sorts. We have no idea if this is a good idea or not, but it should be interesting either way.
