The basketball season tips off for the Lobo Women’s Basketball Program tonight in the second game of a Lobo doubleheader. After dominating two instate DII schools in exhibition games, the Lobos open the season against Southland Conference’s Houston Baptist. The Lobos are coming off a season where they went 21-13 and Houston Baptist finished their season 15-18. This should be a good first test for the Lobos as they get their legs under them this season. The Lobos non-conference schedule isn’t as tough as last year’s, but that doesn’t mean they’re playing terrible teams.

Lobo Women’s Basketball Season Preview
The Lobo Women’s Basketball Program looks to build off of last year’s very encouraging season that saw the Lobos finish the season 21-13 overall and 14-4 in Mountain West Play. The Lobos ended up making the Mountain West Tournament Final and making the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. With such a great turnaround, Coach Sanchez was awarded a contract extension as she tries to get the program back to where it was in the early 2000’s. This program is on the rise with a talented roster and recruiting keeps on getting better, I am excited for this season and do think this team has good shot to win the Mountain West.
Women’s Basketball vs NMHU Preview
After a convincing, comfortable win against Western New Mexico in their first exhibition game, the Lobos will put the finishing touches on their preseason by hosting New Mexico Highlands. The first game was a great coming-out party for the freshmen and also was a good display of the level of talent that this team has from top to bottom. This game should be more of the same, mostly serving as a great chance to get to know the entire roster.
Women’s Basketball vs. WNMU Game Preview
After being nice and allowing the men’s team to play their exhibition first, the Lady Lobos start their season tonight with an exhibition game against Western New Mexico. This is the first time these two teams have ever played, which is kind of amazing in its own right, so we’ll be able to see something tonight that we’ve never seen before.
State of the Programs: Part 1
At last, summer is coming to an end and the start of University of New Mexico Lobo Sports are upon us. It is time for every Lobo fan to examine what realistic expectations and goals should be for each Lobo sports team. As fans, it can be difficult to judge a program subjectively, as we are more prone to letting our emotions get in the way. So, here we are trying to step back and look back at the numbers and the results that we have available to us. The athletic department at New Mexico has set itself up to be relevant and competing for conference titles in most of the sports, and has even built some nationally recognized programs.
In these posts, we’ll tier the programs by their current state. It is worth stressing that where these programs are right now doesn’t mean that this is where they will always be. With the proper support and leadership in place, any of the programs can see a drastic improvement. For example, men’s soccer was nowhere close to where it is now, ever since Coach Fishbein took over.
