Cross Country Mountain West Championship Recap
On Friday, the cross country teams traveled to Idaho to take on the other members of the Mountain West for the conference championships. As expected, the women again took home the trophy, making it nine years in a row. On the men’s side, the young team continued to show improvement, running a strong race to place fifth in a tough field.
Catching up with Cross Country
We’re in the final stretch of the cross country season, with conference, regional, and national championships all coming up within the next month. So, it’s high time for us to check in with both teams to see how they’ve been doing and see where they might go from here.
Cross Country Season Preview
Tomorrow, the Lobo cross country teams will see their first real action of the year when they head to South Bend, Indiana for the Notre Dame Invitational. For the women, it will be the first step towards defending a national title, which is still awesome to think about. For the men, it will be the first step towards returning to their rightful place as one of the nation’s top teams. Both teams have a lot of new faces, but are filled with talent, which could lead to another eventful year.
Women’s Cross Country Win National Championship
Before the cross country season began, I wrote a preview entitled “Cross Country’s High Expectations.” In it, I referenced the women’s cross country team’s third place finish at the NCAA National Championships last year and implied that the team had the potential to be competitive nationally again. Sometime in the past couple of months, those high expectations went from thinking that the team could be in the hunt for the national title to thinking that the team should win the title. On Saturday, the women delivered and did so in spectacular fashion.
NCAA Mountain Cross Country Regional Recap
This past Friday, the best college cross country teams in the Mountain Region, some of which are the best in the country, gathered on the UNM North Golf Course for the NCAA Mountain Cross Country Regionals. Naturally, both the Lobo men’s and women’s teams were there to take part. The top two teams in each race got an automatic bid to the National Championships this Saturday, so for many teams, this was their last shot to extend their season.
MWC Cross Country Championship Recap
Today, on a slightly chilly but still beautiful day out in Reno, Nevada, the UNM Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams set out to defend several years of conference title sweeps. It was a tough course and an event filled with some very good teams in both races, so, unfortunately, the sweep streak was broken. However, while the banged-up men’s side wasn’t able to keep up with the other top teams in the conference, the women continued their streak of dominance.

Cross Country: Wisconsin adidas Invitational Recap
This past Friday, the UNM men’s and women’s cross country teams headed up to Madison, WI for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational to compete against some of the top teams in the country. In the Men’s 8k, 28 of the 36 teams competing were either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls while in the Women’s 6k, 20 of the 36 teams were ranked. The men held their own, finishing 23rd in the stacked field while showing some positive signs for the rest of the season. The women were the real story of the day, giving an incredible, record-setting performance to dominate the field.
