The Lobos (0-1-0) fought hard in their first match on the road against a tough Texas Tech squad (1-0-0) before falling 2-1. It was a great and encouraging opener for the Lobos, as with the exception of the first 20 minutes of second half, the Lobos played on even terms with the Red Raiders. After the Red Raiders scored their second goal so quickly after their first, it wouldn’t have surprised me if the final score was 4-0. However, the Lobos rallied to outplay the Red Raiders for the last 20+ minutes.

Women’s Soccer at Texas Tech Match Preview
After beating ENMU 2-1 in an exhibition match, the Lobos kick off their 2016 campaign with a tough task on the road against Texas Tech. Last year in the matchup, the Lobos lost a 1-0 game in Albuquerque against the then nationally-ranked Red Raiders team. The Lobos are coming off a solid 10-8-2 year, in which they went 6-3-1 on the road, and they hope to keep up that road warrior mentality. Both teams will be looking for answers to questions in their season openers, and without much to go on, the first game can lead to a weird match. The Lobos will need to make the right decision on who is starting in goal and hope that they are able to go all 90 minutes. This should be an exciting match against the two regional rivals.
2016 UNM Women’s Soccer Preview
The Lobo Women’s soccer team looks to build on year one of the Heather Dyche era, where they finished 10-8-2 overall and 7-3-1 in Mountain West play. One of the more surprising things from last year was how much they struggled at the Lobo Soccer Complex, where they went 3-5-0, but they showed great resolve on the road, where they finished 6-3-1, including an unbeaten 5-0-1 in conference play. It will be important for the Lobos to continue the great play on the road and find a way to play better at home if they’re going to build on last year’s successes. To that point, the Lobos will only play one non-Conference home game against NMSU, meaning the Lobos will be on the road for the first month of the season, including games at Texas Tech and California. The Lobos need to keep their head afloat in that first month and find their top form in time for the conference tournament.
Women’s Soccer: MW Tournament Update and SJSU Match Preview
A 2-0 win for the #3 seed Lobos over the #6 seed UNLV sets up Thursday’s semifinal match against #2 seed SJSU. On the other side of the bracket, #5 seed Colorado College won a 1-0 match against #4 seed Wyoming to set up the other semifinal against host and #1 seed SDSU. The semifinals will take place Thursday evening with the UNM vs. SJSU as the first match followed by Colorado College vs. SDSU. Lobos suffered a 2-1 home loss against SJSU in the regular season, which ultimately ended up being the difference between the two teams in the standings.
Women’s Soccer: MW Conference Tournament Preview
After a heartbreaking loss to SDSU in the regular season finale, the Lobos are the #3 seed in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, which starts today. This is a six-team field with the top 2 seeds getting first found byes, with games on Tuesday, Thursday, and the Championship match on Saturday. It is very simple for the Lobos, they must win the tournament to make the NCAA Tournament. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they were able to win this tournament, considering how well they have played on the road this season. SDSU is the favorite in this tournament, as they are both the #1 seed and host of the tournament and they have only lost one conference match this season. However, after SDSU it is a wide-open field.
Women’s Soccer vs. San Diego State Preview
The Lobos host their senior night and last home game of the year tonight when they host regular season champion SDSU. While SDSU has the number one seed locked up and are hosting the conference tournament, the Lobos have plenty to play for. They are in second place in the conference right now, but are only a point ahead of SJSU for the number two seed. I expect we see the Lobos bring everything they have to win this match, although I don’t know if SDSU will play their starters their normal minutes in order to rest them for the tournament. This could very well be the championship match of the tournament next weekend with the Lobos NCAA Tournament hopes on the line. If SDSU does play this match straight up, they will be the clear favorite in this match.

Women’s Soccer vs. Colorado College Preview
The Lobos head up I-25 this weekend to take on Colorado College and Air Force in Colorado Springs. The Lobos play Air Force on Sunday, so the focus today is the match between the 3rd place Lobos and the 4th place Tigers. If you’re surprised by this being a conference matchup, remember that although Colorado College is a D-III college, they are a D-I women’s soccer program, which allows them to be an affiliate member of the Mountain West Conference and allows the conference to have 12 teams playing women’s soccer. Both the Tigers and the Lobos are looking to secure their spot in the Mountain West Championship, which the top six teams qualify for, and this match will likely decide which of these teams ends up with a better seed in the tournament. It will be interesting to see what the field conditions will be like this afternoon after the all the rain the last two days. The Lobos will need to be careful with every pass they make and be extra careful with every clearance on the back line. I view these teams as being very even, so this match truly can go either way.

Women’s Soccer vs. Fresno State Match Preview
Coming off a tough overtime loss Friday night against San Jose State, the Lobos return to action Sunday afternoon to take on the Bulldogs of Fresno State. The Lobos need to get the win in this match to still have a realistic chance to win the regular season conference championship. They will need to make the most of their chances in this match and find at least one first half goal to put pressure on the Bulldogs. I believe that the Lobos will be able to control the match from the first whistle and shouldn’t have much trouble with the Bulldogs. That being said, you still have to stick to your game plan and bring your best game because you don’t know what the Bulldogs are going to bring. This will be an interesting match to see how it plays out; this will be evident when we look at the season stats for both teams.
